What is the SC McKinney‑Vento (EHCY) Program?

McKinney‑Vento ensures children and youth without stable housing can enroll in school right away, stay in their current school, and get needed supports—like free meals, tutoring, transportation, and preschool—without cost or paperwork delays.

Parents don’t need address proof or school records.

How do I apply or request services?

  1. Contact your school’s Local Homeless Education Liaison (LHEP)—they will help you enroll and access services quickly.

  2. Your child starts school immediately, even without records.

  3. Get help with transportation, school meals, tutoring, preschool, counseling, and community referrals.

How long will services take to begin?

Services begin immediately once you connect with the Liaison and your housing situation meets McKinney‑Vento criteria. There’s no waiting period. (SCDE overview).

What do the steps look like?

  1. Identify your current living situation (e.g., doubled up, shelter, motel).

  2. Reach out to the McKinney‑Vento Liaison at your child's school.

  3. Provide basic details, but exact records aren't required.

  4. Enroll immediately—no proof of residence, guardianship, or immunizations needed.

  5. Set up transportation to keep your child in their school of origin if possible.
