What is the Ohkay Owingeh Head Start & Pre‑K Program?

The program, offered by the Pueblo of Ohkay Owingeh’s Department of Education, includes:

  • Head Start (ages 3–5): a federally funded, comprehensive preschool program for low-income families, with priority for tribal members and children with special needs.

  • Pre‑K (age 4 by September 1): New Mexico PreK standards, provided at no cost on a first-come, first-served basis.

  • Early Intervention (C & B): Disability services for children aged 0–5.

The curriculum integrates Tewa language and Acoma culture, plus health, nutrition, screenings, family engagement, and family support services.


How do I apply?

  1. Download and complete the Head Start & Pre‑K application from the Ohkay Owingeh Head Start page.

  2. Gather required documentation (see next section).

  3. Submit:

    • In person at 220 Po’Pay Avenue, Ohkay Owingeh, NM 87566

  4. Applications are accepted year-round; placement based on need and availability.


How long does it take to receive services?

  • Head Start: No fixed timeline—open enrollment continues, with priority given to eligible families and tribal members. Waitlisted as needed. 

  • Pre‑K: Offered on a first-come basis; full capacity is usually reached early.


What do the application steps look like?

  1. Complete and submit application with documentation.

  2. Staff review for eligibility and placement.

  3. Accepted families are notified and invited to orientation or intake.

  4. Children begin following program schedules:

    • Head Start: Monday–Friday, approx. 8:30 am–1:30 pm with bus service.

    • Pre‑K: Same hours as Head Start; one classroom with 17 spots. 


What documentation is required?

  • Completed program application.

  • Child’s birth certificate and Social Security card

  • Proof of income or assistance (pay stubs, W-2, TANF, SSI).

  • Immunization and health screening records. 

  • Disability documentation or IEP/IFSP, if applicable. 


Common FAQs

Who is eligible?

  • Head Start: Ages 3–5, prioritizing low-income, Native children, or those with special needs.

  • Pre‑K: All 4-year-olds (by Sept 1) with no income requirement—first-come basis. 

Is there a cost?
No—both Head Start and Pre‑K are free. 

What services are provided?
Health screenings (vision, dental, behavioral), nutritious meals, Tewa culture, family engagement, special education, transportation, field trips, STEM events, T-shirt and book giveaways.

Is Tewa language included?
Yes—Tewa and cultural values are integrated into the curriculum, celebrating tribal identity.

What hours are programs?
8:30 am–1:30 pm, Monday–Friday, including daily bus service for eligible families.
